After getting myself a few of the Men's shirts and pants in the Sahara line, and then going hiking out in the heat, my wife looked at me with jealousy at how cool (relatively I am sure) I was in the desert heat. SO, I decided to surprise her with some good warm weather hiking clothes, this shirt and some convertable pants.
At first, she really liked this shirt. It fit well, and by that I mean it wasn't sexy, but comfortable, and good for the trail. Then we went out and did come hiking over a weekend.
Piles and Piles!! I couldn't believe it. My shirt (Men's Sahara) was fine, but hers piled horribly where she had her daypack/camelpack on. We were both a little upset, since, besides this, the shirt worked great! She felt cooler, had better air venting, all the things that make this shirt better than just a cotton tee... but the Piling. Ugh.
So I promptly returned it. (Thank goodness for REI's great return policy!) Then we went out again, and she looked forwards to trying out the "new" one.
Piles and Piles again. IF they are up, I have included pics of the shirt, and what it does under the "strain" of a daypack...which was lightly loaded fyi, snacks, camelback, map. Nothing like a full load.
So, far, I am very displeased at the quality of this REI shirt! It works great, but beware! If you carry something that makes contact with it, you just might get piles and piles!

I've used this shirt once in arid desert climate and the shirt worked well, keeping me protected from the sun, but cool and breezy. The flaw with this product is the micro-ripstop nylon fabric. With just one wear and wash, the fabric pilled horribly on the surface and it really showed on the white fabric. I had carried a shoulder bag with photo equipment and that area was the worst. Whats more is that small snags and pills caused the fabric to bunch along the affected threads. I wish this shirt was more durable.

I own three of these shirts - white, RED, and tan/beige, and generally like them - although the tactel supplex nylon pills and is not as durable as some might like. The shirt is a good value for its price point, frankly. The light colors work for desert & warm-weather hiking and travel; the RED is wonderful for Sierra backpacking and cooler-weather trekking (makes nice photos and I'm vain enough to choose outdoor clothing that works with my greenish skin tone :-) ). UNFORTUNATELY, REI, as have many other manufacturers of outdoor clothing, changed the red color (don't know what trendy name was used to describe the red of about 4 years ago) to an orangey-coral color called "heartbeat." It displays on-screen as a vibrant red - but the actual fabric color is definitely not blood-red, but a muted red-orange. I was quite disappointed when I opened the package, because my 4-year-old shirt has faded and I was looking forward to replacing it (hey, red pigments fade in UV - I don't think there's a red that doesn't, and don't believe that color fading is a cause to return an item!!!!). The new shirt's being returned. Please bring red back, product designers!

I bought three of these shirts to take on a Mission trip to Sudan and was very happy with them. I wore them on the airplanes to help regulate the temperature. I could use them as long sleeve shirts or fold up the sleeves and unzip the sides to get better airflow. I also used them heavily in Sudan. The shirts worked as advertised, are very light weight, dry quickly, and pack down very small. I have used them since returning and throw them in my travel bag for quick get aways.

I have already four of this and I purchased two more. I work outside as a gardener and wear every day.
Two side vents in both side control the air flow and very comfortable even very hot day and also prevent UV. The neck area have extended fabric and it helps neck protection. I also use for traveling and backpacking, too. It is very light and compact. Wash & dry, very fast.
It looks very good in traveling, too. After 4 years in heavy use, I see some fade in the back area but I think it is normal.
Because my normal T-shirt fades in just one season.
I gave one for my friend and she love it, too.

This shirt is great at the beach as a cover-up; on hikes (lots of pockets for sunscreen, glasses and lipgloss...yeah, I am a girl; working out in the garden (I have shoved my gloves into the side zip pockets0: for walking the dog (you don't want to know what I have shoved in the zip up side pockets). I like this shirt so much I ordered another. I only wish they had some more neutral colors beside the tan....

REI must have changed the fabric because unlike the other reviews, my shirt did not pill even though I carried a backpack. I took this shirt to Peru and was surprised how cool it was in the heat and while hiking and climbing up the ruins. The side vents are amazing! Other people were wearing short sleeves and they were sunburned to a crisp. Even though this isn't the most stylish shirt, I wass suprised how flattering the fit is and it kept my skin from getting damaged. I would love to see some other colors because the tan is the only color I like. I would definitely buy at least one other for future hiking trips.

This shirt kept me cool, sunburn free and dried quickly. It lasted the entirety of the pacific crest trail (2653 miles) with out a single tear or lost button. It did lose its bug resistance after a few washings though.

I bought this to protect me from the sun while gardening but found that it was chic enough to wear with black pants to my nephew's college graduation. My sister liked it so much that she bought one too, and they protected both of us from the equatorial sun in the Galapagos. Best of all, an oxygen-powered laundry soak gets all the grime from gardening out and makes it good to go as urban casual again!

This shirt has survived rain, wind, mud, and more barbed wire fences than I care to recall.

The shirt really proved itself to me this summer. Yes. A long sleeve shirt in mid 90 degree weather. It was me vs. the mosquitoes. I won. Proof positive!

Also, a great shirt for travelling! Light as a feather, convertible, layerable, but does get a little irreversibly wrinkled if stuffed in a pack for too long.
